AnnouncementsGermantown Chorus goes on hiatus(08/25/2022) Farewell....For now?
Like so many organizations, the Germantown Chorus has faced incredible challenges since the COVID pandemic began. Under the direction of the talented Ryan Lakanen, we continued to make beautiful music in creative ways. Sadly, our director is relocating to Michigan to be closer to family. The board of the Chorus has decided that considering Ryan’s departure and the profound decline of membership experienced over the last many years that it is prudent at this time to suspend operation. A staple in Germantown, the chorus began in 1986 as a summer program sponsored by the City of Germantown’s Parks and Recreation Department. These singers so enjoyed the experience that they remained organized and became a place for singers of all experience levels and backgrounds to “make a joyful noise”. We became the opening act for the Germantown Festival for years, we have sung in Nursing Homes, multiple concerts each year with a variety of musical styles and genres. The highlight of our season was our annual “Music at Twilight” which featured an amazing concert, a wonderful meal and an exciting live and silent auctions. This wonderful evening was completely pulled off by an army of chorus volunteers who donated their time and talent towards making a memorable event for their patrons. What will be missed most, however, is the opportunity to sing in our home, the Germantown Performing Arts Center, for the holiday concert with our wonderful orchestra, the GSO. We continue to maintain a robust library; we still have our risers and all the items needed to resume rehearsals and performances. This library and the operation structure are in place and the board of directors has not disbanded. It is our hope that in the future we will evaluate who we are, discern a new direction, and recreate the creative, joyful entity that is The Germantown Community Chorus. Interested parties who would like to direct this group are encouraged to contact the Board. Imagining Seasons concert update(3/20/21) The Imagining Seasons concert will be on Saturday, April 30th, at 3:00 pm. It will consist of music and poetry with seasonal themes, and will no longer be a fundraiser with items for sale. Please join us for what will hopefully be a beautiful afternoon! Outdoor seating will be limited, so bring your own chairs and blankets if you like.
Update on the Holiday Concert(11/2/21) It has been recently decided that the Chorus will not be performing with the Germantown Symphony Orchestra at GPAC this year. Unfortunately, we just don't have the number of singers needed. Many of our members are still sitting out the pandemic at home, and the logistics didn't quite work out with the high school groups we were collaborating with. We look forward to a day in the future when we can once again have a large choir on the same stage as the orchestra.
You can still hear us at the Germantown Tree Lighting on November 26th! And the GSO will have an abbreviated concert on December 11th with soloists. Holiday music incoming!(10/9/21) We will begin rehearsals of holiday repertoire on October 18th. The annual Germantown Tree Lighting ceremony will return to being a live event this year! We are also currently planning the annual Holiday Concert with the orchestra at GPAC.
